First Presbyterian Nursery School

Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-K Program sets our children up for kindergarten readiness by providing a classroom experience that mirrors what students will encounter as they transition into kindergarten. Each day is thoughtfully structured to help children become comfortable with routines, expectations, and learning experiences similar to those in a kindergarten classroom.

Pre-K continues to foster a love of learning through interactive, intentional play. Teachers nurture students’ social and emotional development through hands-on, engaging instruction. Children participate in many “kindergarten-like” experiences, including morning message, weekend news sharing, math explorations, data collection, rich literature experiences, and individualized instruction.

All eight Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS) are addressed. Students are assessed regularly, and instruction is tailored to meet individual needs. Cognition, social-emotional growth, and physical development are seamlessly woven into meaningful experimentation and exploration. Small-group activities and individualized instruction support children’s growth and help them thrive.

Our comprehensive curriculum in language and literacy, creative arts, mathematics, science, and social studies ensures that students are well prepared for kindergarten. The Wilson Fundations handwriting program further supports readiness by building foundational writing skills, sight word recognition, and more. Students in the Pre-K Program participate in a daily music class, a dedicated weekly science class, and use the most challenging parts of our playground to support physical development and confidence.
